    North Norfolk Railway

William Marriott built the North Norfolk Railway line in 1887.  Over its lifetime it hasn’t changed much. The line runs from Sheringham to Holt and winds through the stunning North Norfolk countryside. A complete trip will take you 10.5 miles delighting young and old alike.

Volunteers make up the biggest part of the work force here and have helped The Poppy Line grow.  Engineers have now connected by a short link to the main Sheringham British Rail line across the road.  As a result of the link to British Rail it now allows visiting famous vintage locomotives to run on the line from time to time.  Often referred to as the North Norfolk Steam Railway enthusiasts from around the country have offered their services on occasion.

Sheringham railway station is home to the children’s activity coach providing fun for younger members of the family. The buffet and souvenir shops are here whilst at Holt, a short bus ride or walk gets you into town.

Weybourne station is a great place to view the engines in closer detail. Along the line, the drivers are happy to answer questions and being volunteers are happy to share their own enthusiasm.  At Weybourne you can take a look at the carriage maintenance and restoration centre, labours of love going on here.  Kelling Heath Park a stop away has a Nature Trail for the physically able and adventurous types.

Many steam engines are used to pull the carriages along, a real treat for people watching or travelling aboard.  Vintage diesel engines are used on some of the trips interesting many who remember train travel from their youth.

    Stops along the way

With four stops on the line, Sheringham, Weybourne, Kelling Heath and Holt there are many opportunities to get off the train.   By the stations, wildflowers and wildlife fill this area of North Norfolk.  This area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Riding on the train and getting on and off along the various stops between Sheringham and Holt gives the opportunity to discover more about the history and running of the line and its locomotives.

The railway line links Holt to the whole of Norfolk and beyond.  In Sheringham, the mainline service (which is just across the road from the North Norfolk Railway) can take you to Norwich and the rest of the country.

Explore the various areas around the stops or just to sit and enjoy the refreshments at the stations for a while. Watching or riding the trains would make a welcome, relaxing break from the general hub of life.

Norfolk’s Hidden Gems properties, Well Cottage and White Lion Coach House are in Holt and make a great base if your intention is, to ride the train.  Broadside Cottage in Sheringham or, Park Farm Barn and Bessingham Manor are near the other end of the line.  The North Norfolk Railway is a great day out to enjoy, worth the trip from any of our properties.

North Norfolk Railway isn’t just for the enthusiasts, families and visitors travel many miles to see history in action.
